In 1306, The King, Cham and Che Man taken the Chau O and Chau Ly area as betrothal gifts to wed Huyen Tran Princess. In 1307, the Chau O and Chau Ly were changed into Thuan Chau and Hoa Chau. In 1435, the Dien Ban place-names was enrolled in “Du Dia Chi” by the Nguyen Trai King, including 95 communes belonged to Trieu Phong precinct, Thuan Hoa road. At that time, Dien Ban was known as the land having traditional produces, the peole living was stable and developing. They had known to plant the wet rice, the mulberry, raise silkworms, silk weaving and many other traditional industries. Along to expand the country to the South, the Dien Ban district had become to “the firm fence” of native country in order to against the bother of Chiem forces in the South, and it was also the jumping-off to expand territory

In the year of 1471, the King, Le Thanh Tong founded “Thua Tuyen” religion in Quang Nam. In 1520, the King, Le Chieu Tong changed it to Quang Nam town. The area of Dien Ban still belonged to Trieu Phong district, Thuan Hoa road. In 1962, Nguyen Hoang changed it to Quang Nam palace. In 1964, Dien Ban district was separated from Trieu Phong district, Thuan Hoa road to Dien Ban district, Quang Nam palace. Quang Nam palace is located Thanh Chiem commune, Dien Phuoc precinct, Dien Ban district where princes of The Nguyen Lord controled in turn. With the exit of Quang Nam in the Dien Ban area had asserted its position more. Economy – Culture – Military of Dien Ban in the Dinh period is more developing with every passing day and became to the chief land of Dang country in the during of 17th – 18th century.

In 1803, the King “Gia Long” established two government headquarters in Quang Nam province, that are Dien Ban and Thang Hoa. Dien Ban was composed of two districts: Dien Phuoc and Hoa Vang. Dien Phuoc district is now Dien Ban district. In 1833, Quang Nam province was built in La Qua village (Vinh Dien town at present). The existence of Quang Nam during the first half of the nineteenth century (until 1945) had further confirmed its important role and development in the field of economy, culture, politics and military at the period of the Nguyen Dynasty.

From 1945 to 1954, Dien Ban district was an administrative unit of Quang Nam province and Quang Nam - Da Nang province. In the period of Vietnamese people carried out a war of resistance against the U.S. imperialists, from July 31, 1962, Quang Nam province was separated into two provinces namely Quang Nam and Quang Tin by Sai Gon Puppet government, Dien Ban district was an administrative unit of Quang Nam province. But for the revolutionary government, Dien Ban is under Quang Da province. During two wars against the French colonialists and the U.S. imperialists, Dien Ban district was destroyed heavily but people here were determined to stay here and fight to defend their homeland.

Dien Ban town is known as Sacred land with extraordinary people with many laureate in former competition-examinations and patriots such as Hoang Dieu - former Chief of Hanoi, Dr. Pham Phu Thu with innovative thought for the country, Dr. Tran Quy Cap with Duy Tan movement, Tran Cao Van, Le Dinh Duong, Phan Thanh, the diplomat Nguyen Thanh Y. During two wars against French and America, the revolutionary and patriotic traditions of people of Dien Ban district continued to promote. And now, Dien Ban is the district where has many  typical revolutionary martyrs, war invalids and Vietnamese heroic mothers of the country such as ​​Nguyen Van Troi, Tran Thi Ly, mother Nguyen Thi Thu who has 9 children as martyrs. There are 8,920 martyrs, 7,756 war invalids, 492 sick soldiers, 1611 Vietnamese heroic mothers and 21 groups, 47 individuals that are awarded the title "the Hero of the People's Armed Forces”.

  After the Southern was totally liberated on April 30,1975, Quang Nam province was called Quang Nam - Da Nang province, including Da Nang city, Tam Ky town, Hoi An Town and 14 districts. Dien Ban is one of 14 districts of Quang Nam. From January 01, 1997, the date of separation of Quang Nam Da Nang province into Da Nang city and Quang Nam province, Dien Ban district is one of districts of Quang Nam province.
